Stone Restoration

Grade 2 offers specialist restoration services to stone and masonry structures across the UK.

Our methods of restoration include:

  • Traditional hand placed mortars such as Remmers, Parex and Mason’s restoration products.
  • DOFF and TORC systems to clean stonework and masonry.
  • Hydrophobising coatings to protect stonework and masonry from water penetration and to prevent and delay future algae and vegetation growth.

Our stone cleaning systems are advantageous to previous restoration methods because there is no need for the use of chemicals in the process.

For further information, please contact our office on info@grade2.co.uk or by telephone on 0151 606 8000.

The DOFF system cleans stonework and masonry using high temperature steam. When the temperature in the system is high the pressure on the surface being cleaned is very gentle and the volume of water is low. The surface is therefore not saturated and will be dry within minutes.

The system can achieve temperatures of 150 degrees at nozzle end, the operator can vary the temperature to remove moss, algae, fungi, other biological matter and the system will also kill off spores.

The TORC system is a complete stone cleaning system that Grade 2 offers as a service.

The system can be used to remove carbon sulphation, lime and cement based paints, paint residues, some old oil based paints, bitumen and lime scale. The TORC system works by creating a gentle swirling vortex using a mixture of air pressure, little water and a safe inert granulate.

Project – The Cotton Exchange

Works – DOFF & TORC Cleaning

Property History – The present building in Old Hall Street was erected in 1905–06 and the building was officially opened by the Prince and Princess of Wales on 30 November 1906.

Its façade was in Neoclassical style, with Baroque towers at the angles. Its exterior decoration included statues. Inside the building was the latest technology for communicating with cotton trading elsewhere in the world, including telephones, and cables linking directly with New York.

The Old Hall Street front was replaced with a modern-style façade in 1967–69, and the former main exchange hall was replaced by a courtyard.

Grade 2 were approached in 2016 to undertake DOFF and TORC cleaning to the Edmund Street elevation.

Project – Booths Park Fountain

Works – DOFF Cleaning & Stone Restoration

Manufacturer – Remmers

Property History – The fountain is based on the same site as Booths Hall seen above, which was originally built in 1292. The site has retained many of its heritage features and now provides commercial office space and facilities for outdoor events.

Our team has extensive experience with hand placed stone restoration mortars and various stone cleaning methodologies, enabling correct specification for restoration for every project.
Prior to any restoration works the team DOFF cleaned the full surface area of the fountain, removing heavy build ups of algae, dirt and vegetation.

Using Remmers Restoration products we carefully reformed the fountain head back to its original profile, and re-bedded and re-fixed the copings that sit on the base.

The end product was a spectacular transformation, the client was very pleased with all works carried out.
